NEW West Country Lupins

We're very excited to have West Country Lupins at Ardcarne Garden Centre. These are a new range of superior hybrids with large tapering spikes of lightly fragrant flowers in a range of wonderful colours. The growth is especially strong and upright which means that staking is not required. And they flower for ages in the summer garden.

We've a range of varieties and sizes at the moment but HURRY they are going fast!

What to do in your garden this week:

What to do in your garden this week:

Job of the week: Support clematis

Clematis are starting into full growth now and will rapidly clamber up supports, winding their leaf stalks around wires or canes to cling on. So make sure that there are adequate structures in place as soon as you plant: fix trellis or wires to fences or walls, making sure they are securely fastened. Gently tease out the stems towards their support and tie in loosely to encourage them in the right direction.

Flowers:
  • Sow biennial wallflowers, foxgloves and forget-me-nots for blooms next year
  • Pinch out the tips of seedling antirrhinums to encourage bushy growth
  • Divide primulas and polyanthus after they finish flowering
Fruit & veg:
  • Plant up hanging baskets - choose some upright plants for the centre as well as lots of trailing varieties.
  • Nip out the tips of broad beans to deter blackfly
  • Hoe onion and garlic beds to keep weeds at bay
Greenhouse:
  • Remove bubblewrap insulation or fleece once there's no more threat of frost
  • Plant up grow bags with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers
  • Keep the glasshouse or tunnel well ventilated on warm days.

Around the garden:

  • Store opened seed packets in an airtight container somewhere cool, dark and dry
  • Mulch bare soil around roses and perennials
  • Hoe bare soil and weed out perennial nasties to lessen competition for flowers
