The Plant Collector's Balcony

Evoking the atmosphere of a tranquil woodland, this densely vegetated balcony space features an abundance of shade-tolerant outdoor and indoor plants, grouped within their species and displayed in a series of shelves, mini greenhouses, planters, and on trellis and a pergola.
A petite museum of planting, it gives visitors an opportunity to see how jungle- and woodland-style plants might grow and thrive in the wild. Here moss carpets the ground; lichens drape under branches; vines and epiphytes climb the tree trunks.
Bathed in green light, with a rich tapestry of textures offset by splashes of intense colour, this is a garden for serious plant lovers. It is created by first-time Bloom designer, Tom Bradford, as an intimate and enveloping space where people and wildlife co-exist happily within a peaceful, biodiverse ecosystem.
Structure and Plant Composition
The garden creates a controlled microclimate: a lightweight canopy softens sun and rainfall, while sheltered pockets provide protection from wind and cooler conditions. Informal work surfaces offer space for potting, display, or quiet use. The design encourages reuse and seasonal movement of plants, supporting a sustainable, low-impact approach to gardening in compact urban spaces.
Vertical elements are formed from natural, live-edge timber slabs, used to evoke the presence of tall, columnar tree trunks. These elements also act as a framework for the pergola canopy above, helping to define enclosure and scale. Between them, sheltered crevices are created, allowing for pockets of dense planting and intimate display areas. The boundaries are treated as immersive, layered edges, where planting softens the enclosure and screens the surrounding context, enhancing the sense of being within a secluded, woodland-inspired retreat.
As a balcony garden, there is no natural soil profile, and site conditions are controlled rather than mimicking the temporary nature of the show environment. Planting is therefore entirely container-based, allowing tailored growing media to suit the specific needs of each species.
The planting scheme is a lush, layered composition of tropical-style indoor plants, selected for their contrasting foliage, soft textures, and occasional flowering highlights.
The Plant Collector’s Balcony Garden is conceived as a sanctuary for an indoor plant enthusiast—a space to display, enjoy, and continually reconfigure a personal plant collection. While rooted in the home environment, it comes into its own during warmer months, when houseplants can be moved outdoors and arranged in evolving compositions.
