Grow Your Own

'Grow Your Own' is becoming increasingly popular now with people of all ages choosing to produce their own fruit and vegetables, and it is easy to see why. As well as the satisfaction that comes from eating something fresh from your own plot, there are a great deal of benefits to be had:

  • Food Security - know exactly where your food is from and how it has been treated.
  • Fitness and Well-Being - we all know how being outdoors in the fresh air can make you feel better, but gardening is now being increasing recognised by the medical profession as a means of improving your physical and mental health as well as creating a greater connection with your food and your environment.
  • Variety - no matter how much our supermarkets and local stores try to keep up with our ever changing demands, no-where will you find the variety of fruit and vegetables, tastes and textures that you will find by growing your own and experimenting with different cultivars.
  • Reduce your Carbon Footprint - you can't get much nearer than your back garden or field, when it comes to importing vegetables to your kitchen. With increasing concerns about our environment and climate, there could be no better way to reduce your food air-miles, than munching on your own fresh sugar-snap peas as opposed to having them flown from as far a field as Zambia. Then of course there is all that packaging you cut down on!

Here at Ardcarne Garden Centre we encourage everyone to grow even the smallest amount of their fruit or vegetable intake. No matter whether you have a few acres to spare, or a balcony on which you can plant up a few containers, you may be surprised at just how much you can produce in the space you have. We always have staff to offer advise on crops suitable for our climate and we offer a wide range of seeds, seedlings, fruit trees and bushes as well as any materials you may need to get you started or to add to your plot.
