Fuchsia General Grow Guide...

Fuchsias are much loved for there delicate hanging two-toned flowers and have made something of a comeback in recent years. As a compact and bushy flowering shrub, they are a versatile plant and look well in a mixed border, container or even sometimes grown as an informal hedge. 'Riccartonii' is somewhat of an exception in that it is one of the most hardy varieties and can grow to around 2.5m in height making it one of the best varieties for hedging.

Where to grow:

As a hardy fuchsia, this particular variety is suitable to be grown outside in our Irish climate throughout the year and will do well in a border or container, whatever the soil type, as long as there is good drainage. It won't do so well however, where the soil is extremely wet or dry for extended periods. Unlike many other hardy fuchsia however, 'Riccartonii' will survive less sheltered conditions than most, which again, makes it the variety of choice for hedging.

Ideally you want a spot that is in dappled or partial shade, with a fair amount of afternoon sun.

How to grow:

Unlike many shrubs that prefer spring or autumn planting, it is recommended that you plant even hardy fuchsia such as these in early summer so as to avoid damage from cold during their initial settling in period. They can be planted later in the summer but if that is the case you will need to keep an eye on them and water more in dry weather

If you are planting in a border, unlike many shrubs, fuchsia benefit from the shrub base being planted around 5cm (2”) deeper than the soil level in order to protect the crown in winter and encourage regrowth after cold winter snaps.

For container growing a peat-free multi-purpose compost is recommended or a loam based compost such as John Innes No. 2

Maintenance:

Hardy fuchsia such as these are pretty low maintenance. As with most newly planted shrubs or perennials, it is always recommended that you water regularly in the first spring and summer but after that you would only really need to water in particularly hot and dry periods.

There should generally be no need to feed your border plants unless growth is very poor, in which case they may benefit from a feed of Blood, Fish & Bone in the spring. Fuchsia will always benefit from a mulch of organic matter in autumn or spring, which will help condition the soil and protect the crown.

As for pruning, most plants will just need a tidy up in the spring, cutting back any dead shoots to healthy growth further down the stem.

If you're looking to propagate new plants this is best done from hardwood cuttings taken in late autumn for planting out the following summer.
