Christmas Tree Shopping Guide 2025

There is nothing like that first breath of fresh pine when you bring home a real Christmas tree — the scent alone feels like the beginning of the festive season. But with so many wonderful options available today, from fresh-cut trees to living potted varieties, artificial trees, and contemporary alternatives, choosing the perfect Christmas centrepiece can be half the fun. Whether you're after tradition, convenience, sustainability or creativity, there's a Christmas tree to suit every home and every style.

Fresh-Cut Christmas Trees

Fresh-cut trees remain the most iconic choice, offering that unmatched aroma and natural beauty. At this time of year, our garden centre proudly stocks two much-loved varieties:

Nordmann Fir

The Nordmann Fir is one of the most popular Christmas trees in Ireland, valued for its soft needles and excellent needle retention.

  • Appearance: Full, even shape with glossy, dark green needles.
  • Benefits: Soft, child- and pet-friendly needles; minimal shedding.
  • Best for: Busy households, warm rooms, and anyone wanting a low-maintenance real tree.

Noble Fir

Known for its rich blue-green colour and strong, evenly spaced branches, the Noble Fir is perfect for displaying heavier or more extravagant ornaments.

  • Appearance: Elegant branch structure with a subtle silvery tone.
  • Benefits: Superb needle retention and strong branches for large decorations.
  • Best for: Showpiece ornaments and a classic, premium look.

How to Care for Fresh-Cut Trees

  • Give the tree a fresh cut at the base before placing it in a stand.
  • Use a high-quality Christmas tree stand designed for real trees (we stock two excellent types — both easy to use and very sturdy).
  • Keep your tree topped up with water daily; a well-hydrated tree holds its needles and colour far longer.
  • Position away from direct heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.

We currently have both varieties in stock in a variety of sizes ranging from around 5ft (150cm) to 15ft (450cm) with prices starting at just €49.

These are available in store only.

Once you have selected your tree, we will wrap it for you for ease of transport and to help protect your tree until you get it home.

Living (Potted) Christmas Trees

If you'd like a tree that lasts long beyond the season — and can even become part of your garden — a living potted Christmas tree is a fantastic choice. These trees can be used indoors for the holidays (in a cool room), enjoyed again outdoors, and then planted in the garden or brought back next year.

  • After Christmas, acclimatise gradually to the outdoors before planting or placing outside full-time.

Artificial trees have come a long way and remain a brilliant option for convenience, longevity, and consistent shape. We stock a wide range of artificial trees — from slim pencil styles to luxurious full silhouettes and snowy or pre-lit varieties to make decorating effortless. We also offer free delivery on a large selection of artificial Christmas trees with discounts available on selected items (some with free delivery on top of the discount!)

  • Benefits: Reusable year after year; minimal maintenance; no dropped needles.
  • Best for: Warm rooms, allergy sufferers, busy households, or those looking for a specific style or size.

Contemporary & Creative Alternatives

If you love something a bit different, or simply want extra festive features around the home, modern Christmas tree alternatives are becoming increasingly popular.

Twinkle Trees

These elegant metal-frame LED trees create instant atmosphere — magical indoors or outside. They’re lightweight, stylish, and perfect for hallways, porches, or spaces where a traditional tree won’t fit.

Black Silhouette Trees

Crafted from wood or sheet metal, silhouette trees offer a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired look. Ideal for modern homes or as an additional decorative piece, especially on sideboards or consoles.

Make Your Own Alternative Tree

Feeling creative? Many customers enjoy crafting their own take on a Christmas tree using branches, driftwood, crates, or natural materials. A simple arrangement of branches in a vase, decorated with fairy lights and baubles, can make a striking festive feature — perfect for smaller rooms, kitchens, or hallways.
